Army has taken new steps to make it easier for Sikhs, Muslims and other religious minorities to obtain approval to dress and groom themselves according to their religious customs while serving in the military, a spokesman said on Thursday. Army Secretary Eric Fanning, in a memorandum signed this week, revised the uniform policy to set appearance standards for people seeking religious accommodations to wear beards, turbans and head scarfs. The new rules also enable brigade-level commanders to approve the religious accommodations, an authority that previously rested with the Army secretary. Denial of a religious accommodation may be appealed as high as the Army secretary. Captain Kamal Kalsi, a Sikh, is seen with a camouflage turban in this September file photo An approved religious accommodation will continue throughout the soldier’s career and may not be revoked or modified without approval of the Army secretary, the memo says. The accommodation will not affect job specialties or duty locations, except in a few limited cases, the memo says. The new rules were welcomed by the Sikh Coalition. Soldiers with religious accommodations still must be able to wear combat helmets and other protective headgear and must modify their hairstyles to achieve a proper fit file Sikhs have a long tradition of military service in India and elsewhere and have served in the United States as far back as World War One. But uniform reforms after the Vietnam War made it difficult for them to serve without violating the tenets of their faith. The new rules permit religious accommodations for beards, but they may not be longer than two inches unless rolled or tied up.

Background[ edit ] From , army regulations required the use of ear protection on shooting ranges and in artillery drill. I have nothing to add to the court’s stated reservations about the plaintiff’s honesty. Without labouring the point, I trust it will be clear to all Members that this case came as a shattering blow to the State’s defence as it laid down a precedent that, even where the plaintiff has been found to be untruthful in the matter of hearing loss, he may still receive substantial compensation for tinnitus.
Severe tinnitus — a constant ringing in the ears — is normally present in a small minority of hearing loss cases. It cannot be measured objectively. The case I have just mentioned prompted a major increase in the number of claims. However, it was the sixth, the K case, that proved to be a major landmark. The floodgates were literally burst open by this judgment. In addition, cases were settled by negotiation during After this, the Law Society of Ireland facilitated negotiations between the Chief State Solicitor’s Office and the Department of Defence on the one hand, and the main solicitors’ firms representing claimants on the other, which led to a suspension of court proceedings while a Department of Health expert group developed a standardised metric for assessing hearing loss.
Although the army deafness claims issue informed the debate on the State Claims Agency’s establishment, initially the Early Settlement Scheme remained outside its remit. We are a laughing stock among defence forces around the world.

Share via Email Gossip — arguably a favorite “sport” in our society — ranks right up there with football and basketball for things we like to talk about. And, even better, it’s never out of season. One of the most common gossip topics in the Army concerns the perception of proper and improper relationships. Soldiers and leaders often discuss terms such as fraternization, inappropriate relationships and prohibited relationships interchangeably; causing plenty of confusion.
The Army has recently released an update to Army Regulation , Army Command Policy, which better defines these issues for leaders and Soldiers. The changes took effect on Nov.

British Army The Army is reviewing the ban on beards amid fears the rule is putting off a younger generation of potential recruits. Save What is the meaning of fraternization? What do we in the military perceive as fraternization? Excessively familiar relationships between officers of different ranks may also be considered fraternization, especially when between officers in the same chain of command. It is also important to understand that the term officer includes commissioned and warrant officers. What is really important to understand about the policy is that relationships that have the appearance to be violating the standards are prohibited.
The question is not if it is happening or if it is not happening, but we have to be aware that rumors and appearances, both good and bad, affect the good order and discipline of a unit. For example, business relationships between officers and enlisted personnel are prohibited, such as borrowing or lending money or commercial solicitation.
However, some exceptions are landlord and tenant relationships or one-time transactions like buying a car or a house. Personal relationships, such as sharing of living quarters, and intimate or sexual relationships between officers and enlisted are prohibited.
List of Dishonorable Discharges Other Cases In addition to cases of relationships between soldiers of different ranks, fraternization between trainees and soldiers or between recruiters and recruits is also prohibited. When dating takes place between soldiers of the same rank or between a solider and a civilian employee or government contractor, military regulations only prohibit those relationships which directly affect morale, discipline, respect for authority or otherwise interfere with a mission.
Dating is subject to the same scrutiny as any other form of fraternization. As such, it must reflect professionalism and cannot engender any favoritism or abuses of position. Should two soldiers of the same rank be married and one of them receive a promotion, all precautions will be taken to avoid putting them in a direct line of command.

Anyone can attend and join in ordinary worship, and assist in social work etc. Such people are regarded as “Friends” of the Army and need make no other committment. Those that wish to become “Soldiers” of The Salvation Army and to be entitled to wear its uniform, swear allegiance to the “Army” as their church.
They also commit themselves to avoid tobaco, drugs other than medically prescribed , gambling and the use of alcohol. This decision was not an original decision when the Army was set up but followed on as a natural consequence of the Army becoming heavily involved within those sections of society, those addicted to tobacco, drugs, gambling, and alchohol. The Army runs special units to assist those that have a problem with these things and a deliberate decision was taken that uniformed Salvationists should avoid these things rather than be thought to be preaching to others that they had to avoid addictions that were harming them and often their families, whilst the Salvationists giving this advice were taking part in “these things” themselves, which could be thought to be hypocracy.
Of course it is a two edged sword and there are those that question why Salvationists who do not “drink” collect from those in Public Houses etc! For those that want to “belong” but for whom giving up these matters does not fit with their lifestyle it is possible to become an “Adherent”, to have a simple enrollment ceremony and to be presented with a Certificate.
